What this guide covers

Clean the dust and repaste first; if noise or high temperatures continue, replace the fan.

Fans differ by model, connector, and whether they include the heatsink.

A failing fan bearing rattles, and the laptop throttles or shuts down under load.

Clean first, then decide

Most overheating and noise starts with dust clogging the fan and heatsink. Blow out the vents and, if you are comfortable opening the base, clean the fan and reapply thermal paste. If temperatures and noise stay high after that, or the fan rattles or does not spin, the bearing is worn and the fan should be replaced.

  • Loud rattle/whir → worn bearing
  • Shutdowns under load → replace
  • Fan does not spin → replace
  • Quiet after cleaning → keep

Match the correct fan

Laptop fans differ by model, connector pin count, and whether they ship bare or attached to the heatsink. Some models also use two fans (left and right) with different parts. Match your laptop model and the existing fan’s connector and side before ordering.

After replacing

Seat the fan flat, route the cable clear of the blades, and reapply fresh thermal paste on the heatsink contact. Good airflow plus a healthy fan brings temperatures back to normal and stops throttling.

Questions customers ask

Is my laptop fan failing or does it just need cleaning?

Try cleaning the dust and repasting first. If the fan still rattles, does not spin, or the laptop overheats and shuts down, the fan needs replacing.

Does the replacement fan include the heatsink?

It varies by model. Some are bare fans, some are fan+heatsink assemblies. The product page states which; match your laptop.

My laptop has two fans — which do I replace?

Dual-fan models use separate left and right fans with different connectors. Identify the failing side and match that exact part.
