On most HP models press Fn + F5 (or the backlight key). The backlight only works if you fitted a backlit variant with its ribbon connected.
How do I know if my laptop keyboard is backlit?
If your current keyboard lights up (often via an Fn + space or Fn + F-key shortcut), order a backlit replacement. A backlit keyboard has an extra ribbon connector, so a non-backlit replacement will not light up even if it fits.
